APHASIA

INTERACTIVE DESIGN OBJECT

Simulating the symptoms of aphasia, this project utilizes chess as a form of linguistic system. The idea is to have a conversation with an aphasic individual through the moves of your chess. Each chess piece acts as the lexicon to our language, the chess set as grammar.

The unique imperfection of these elements come together as a challenging construct even for those who knows the rules of chess and how they way to make their moves. This puts a regular audience in the shoes of an aphasic individual.

Representation of Aphasic Symptoms

The deprivation of one’s ability to seek the right word or apply the right syntax to convey thoughts.

Why is this important? It’s one thing to know and another to convey. Aphasic individual are not mentally challenged, they are capable of forming thoughts and ideas, but the challenge is to conveying their thoughts.

Deconstructing symptoms and apply to chess mechanism.

To visualize the communication process and symptoms of an aphasic individual, we begin to redesign a regular chessboard and created a unique platform of expression that encompasses the different challenges that one would face when their linguistic systems are impaired. We have one half of the chessboard where the rules (vocabulary), structure (syntax), and available actions (message) remains the same, while the other one is slightly reconstructed .
